Volunteer to Connect with Older Adults
Each semester during the school year, DOROT welcomes high school students in 9th through 12th grades to intern for ongoing community service. The program brings together teens and older adults for a variety of meaningful activities that result in friendship and understanding across generations. Teens receive high-quality training and service hours.
How It Works
- Who Can Apply? The internship is open to high school students.
- How to Apply: Students complete an application and take part in an in-person group interview.
- Time Commitment: Interns volunteer at DOROT after school for one afternoon a week, Monday – Thursday, between 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM.
- What Interns Do: Students choose one of several volunteer opportunities available per semester. Each activity has a unique start date and time commitment.
- Location: DOROT’s Manhattan office, 171 W. 85th St. or at an older adult’s home for those doing home visits. (See below.)
There is no charge for participation in DOROT’s Teen Internship programs.
Volunteer Opportunities
These are the volunteer opportunities available for Fall 2025:
Home Visits: Two to three interns are grouped together to visit a DOROT older adult each week for 45 – 60 minutes of friendly conversation and companionship. Adults live on the Upper West Side or Upper East Side of Manhattan. Available Monday – Thursday.
Tech Help: Interns provide assistance to older adults with everyday technology while building friendly connections. Adults come to DOROT with their own devices and questions. Teens are available for troubleshooting, guidance, and support. Available Thursdays.
Intergenerational Chess: Students and adults 65+ teach and learn chess from one another. As they do, they laugh, share stories and experiences, and create intergenerational bonds. Available Tuesdays.
Apply for Fall 2025
Applications are now open for the fall semester, which runs from October 20 – December 12.

This program really helped my ability to speak with others in a group setting. And I definitely feel more comfortable talking to new people.
When Generations Connect
In our intergenerational community, older adults and teens discover how much they have in common and how deeply they can enrich each other’s lives.
