“With everything else that gave me a sense of connection also shut down [during the pandemic] I patched together substitutes...Through DOROT, I attended Zoom book talks, concerts, exercise classes, and even had virtual visits with middle-school students.”
DOROT community member Vivian Conan recently shared a personal essay, “Finding Home: Legwork, a Lottery, and Luck”, in the West Side Rag about her journey during the pandemic. In 2020, Vivian went from living in a bright and active community to finding herself without a job, neighbors, or social connections. In hopes of finding friends and a social connections, Vivian found DOROT. She was looking for a community and that’s exactly what she got -- and more!
Through our Aging Alone, Together program, Vivian learned about a housing lottery that ultimately led her to move from her home of 30 years on the Upper West Side to a vibrant, community-oriented apartment building for older adults, on the Upper East Side.
“I signed up for DOROT’s six-week Zoom workshop called ‘Aging Solo.’ It was in a breakout session of the housing module, several weeks in, that I heard someone say, ‘There’s one week left to enter the lottery to get onto the James Lenox House waiting list!”
