April is National Volunteer Month! All month long, we’ll be sharing stories from our incredible community of volunteers.
Today, meet Dale Mackey, a DOROT Volunteer Tech Coach!
Tell us a bit about yourself:
Currently, I'm enjoying volunteering with DOROT and an animal rescue in Tribeca. I took the February 2025 bar exam and hopefully will be a licensed attorney by the end of Summer! I moved to NYC from Raleigh, NC, in 2014, and live in Harlem with my husband and two cats, Henry and Louis.
How did you first get involved with DOROT?
My friend Aida joined DOROT last fall and introduced me to the organization. DOROT's mission spoke to me because I think it's important to make sure every person feels connected to a community.
Why did you choose to become a Tech Coach ?
My husband works in outreach for Brooklyn Public Library, and one of the roles they offer is similar to the tech coach role. I always loved hearing stories about older adults who thrived after learning new technology.
What do you get out of your experience of volunteering at DOROT?
I got really lucky because the first person I connected to was absolutely lovely. She and I will have conversations about nature and spirituality that I don't have with anyone else. She tells me stories about her life growing up in NYC, which are so engaging. She also has a deep interest in art, and I love it when she shares her work with me.
What would you say to someone else who was deciding whether to become a tech coach with DOROT?
Don't be afraid or intimidated to volunteer in this capacity. Be patient with yourself because you are going to be asked something that you might not know how to answer immediately - and that's okay! The relationship you build with your mentee is rewarding and enriching for both of you.
