For National Volunteer Month in April, we're getting to know some of our incredible community of volunteers.
Meet, Michael K., a DOROT Friendly Visiting Volunteer!
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a native New Yorker and live on the Upper East Side. For work, I help manage a team for a finance-based firm. On the personal side, my new relationship has been game changing for me. I travel every year for my birthday to Turks and Caicos—this year, I’m looking forward to traveling with my girlfriend. We are also traveling in July to Saratoga for the horse races and to see Jerry Seinfeld.
I meet with Dorothy, my Friendly Visiting match, every Sunday for brunch after she goes to church. Our time spent together is never quiet. There's always something to talk about.
How did you first get involved with DOROT?
I saw a posting on Facebook in 2023. I volunteered at Package Delivery for Rosh Hashanah, Thanksgiving, Winter, and then Passover the following year. After these experiences, I wanted to do more. I was very close to my mom who was in assisted living. I saw how hard it could be when seniors are alone. I started volunteering for the Friendly Visiting program, which suits my skillset as a person. I like to help people.
What is one of your favorite moments from your experience as a DOROT volunteer?
I have so many favorite moments with Dorothy, but if I have to choose one, I think my most favorite came when I recently told her that I'm dating someone new. She was so happy for me and can't wait to meet my girlfriend. We celebrated her birthday together at a Mediterranean restaurant.
Dorothy knows I'm a phone call away. We’ve developed a bond, and I care very much for her. She’s extremely bright and is always challenging me.
What do you gain from your experience of volunteering at DOROT?
I've gained a new, lasting friendship. Dorothy is a special person. If you'd ever meet her, you'd understand.
